Studying our Games Art BA could mean the games you love playing become the games you’re paid to create!

BA Games Art is designed to specifically address the visual needs of games and their visual development. Whilst developing an understanding of the needs of coders and game developers, students will have a solid grounding in visualisations techniques, character, environment and concept design.

Course information

Delivered in collaboration with the School of Computing and capitalising on expertise within the University-based international Serious Games Institute, this course aims to develop your understanding of the needs of coders and game developers, at the same time addressing the visual needs of games development.

You can learn about industry practices in a simulated games studio environment, gaining a solid grounding in visualisation techniques, character, environment and concept design.

Building on our expertise in animation, graphic design, illustration and games computing, this course offers opportunities to work with animators and illustrators to develop core skills in drawing, perspective and concept development, while learning about the trends and technical developments within the games industry.

In your first year, we will cover research techniques for the purposes of visualisation and idea development. You will also have the opportunity to engage with specialist software training in preparation for working on a collaborative project.

Your course will be primarily based on the development of your studio practice but you will also have lectures, seminars and workshops.

Assessment is by practical and written submissions:

  • Coursework: 10%
  • Practical projects: 90%
  • Essays: 10%

A compulsory Add+vantage module must also be completed.

Only 10% of assessments are essay based

In a typical week you will have up to 16 contact hours of teaching and this will break down as:

  • Personal tutorial/small group teaching: up to 1 hour smaller tutorial/seminar with focused tutor contact.
  • Medium-group teaching: 1 hour seminar each week.
  • Large-group teaching: 14 hours of studio practice each week.

In addition, you will be expected to undertake 20 hours each week studying and revising in your own time.

The University encourages students to engage with the creative world beyond the UK. This has included cultural trips to New York, Barcelona, Prague, China and Berlin.

There are also field trips within the UK that are designed to enhance students understanding of both the history and developments within the wider creative world.

This is why our ‘Flying Start’ package provides you with a few course essentials. Your full-time fee for an undergraduate degree will cover the following:

1,000 A4 sides of black and white laser printing credits per year.
