Successful completion of this course enables you to ‘top-up’ your existing qualifications – an undergraduate level diploma or equivalent in engineering or related fields – to the internationally recognised ‘honours degree’ classification. It is designed for UK, international and European students seeking to become managers and leaders in technology-based businesses.

Building on your existing engineering skills, this final year course will introduce you to the key aspects of managing a company in an engineering based organisation and the latest developments in business management theory, such as strategic management, supply chain and logistics, quality, project management and environmental management.

Course information

The course is structured around a deliberate cluster of modules which cover some of the most essential modern engineering management activities, as well as the application of engineering in a humanitarian environment.

It aims to deepen your knowledge and capabilities in the key areas of quality management, lean manufacturing, operations, communication and information technology, business, policy and strategy, pervasive issues, supply chain management, humanitarian engineering and manufacturing process improvement.

You should develop a range of management, intellectual and personal skills – including communication, cultural awareness, team working, objective setting, leadership, consultancy, presentation skills and digital literacy – required for operational effectiveness and success. On graduation, you should be better prepared to participate in and lead engineering projects, solving engineering management problems and implementing engineering processes effectively.

Working on your own and in groups, you will study real-life case studies and projects in which you will recommend appropriate management strategy. For example, supplier development strategies, lean and process improvements.

You will be required to carry out an independent piece of research of your choosing, which seeks to develop skills in personal organisation, research and critical thinking, as well as advancing your knowledge in the subject area. Previously, students have looked at Ecosystems innovation, Implementation of industry 4.0 in supply chain management, future development of drones in natural disasters, logistics management technologies.

  • Project

    The main aim of the individual final year project is to give students experience in carrying out a substantial piece of research to a professional standard. Objectives of the exercise are to enable the students to:

     

    • Become an 'expert' in a specialised field of study
    • Develop skills and experience in report writing and presentation
    • Integrate knowledge gained in different course modules
    • Exercise initiative, creativity and imagination.

     

  • Humanitarian Engineering

    Introduces you to the underlying principles and concepts of the humanitarian sector. It is designed to demonstrate the essentials of Humanitarian Practice whilst increasing understanding of the characteristics of natural disasters, conflict induced emergencies and the requirements of an effective humanitarian response. We also consider the concept of social corporate responsibility.

  • Individual Project Introduction

    The aim of this module is to provide preparation for a student to undertake a substantial individual project. Successful completion of the module will require methodical planning, record keeping and self management, effective communication and delivery of report.

  • Manufacturing Process Improvement

    As manufacturing companies are continuingly striving to remain competitive in a global market, it is imperative that they have the knowledge to ensure that their processes operate as effectively as possible. We aim for you to gain an understanding and knowledge of process improvement approaches, their importance in business performance and application, covering the philosophies, tools, systems and techniques associated with Quality and Lean Management. We place some emphasis on the motor industry because the industry is at the forefront of competitive manufacturing developments.

  • Engineering Project Management

    Introduces you to project management and aims to equip you with skills, both human and technical, to lead and work on a variety of projects. We focus on the importance of project management scheduling skills, quality and estimating standards; you will be encouraged to see the role of the project manager within the broader perspective of strategic business management, understanding where projects come from and why they are selected. We also cover the use of project management software like MS Project for creating, analysing and monitoring projects, reinforcing the theoretical teaching.

  • Supply Chain and Logistics Management

    Provides a broad understanding and knowledge of the strategic and operational role of Supply Chain and Logistics Management, relevant to manufacturing, construction, engineering or other technological industrial operations. You will compare supply chain and logistics operations in a variety of scenarios, helping you to recognise how a company achieves competitive advantage through its logistics and supply chain management and be able to make suggestions for improvements where appropriate.

  • New Product Development Strategies

    Aims to help you to develop integrated product, technology and manufacturing strategies through appreciation of company-wide, functional issues. We will cover how to identify and appraise business and functional strategic options around new product introduction, so that you can select the most appropriate for the business to enhance performance, productivity and lead to consumer/customer satisfaction.

  • Regular programme of guest speakers via our Global Leaders Programme (GLP), which in recent years has included the Group Strategy Director of Jaguar Land Rover, a NASA Astronaut and a Vice President of Telefonica Europe.
  • Extensive facilities in our High-Performance Engineering Centre, which houses a 20% scale model wind tunnel (designed and built by the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team), composites lab, metrology lab, four-pot shaker rig, flow lab, AVL engine test cell, automotive workshop, fatigue and tensile testing (Instron), a full-size Harrier Jet, three further simulators, civil engineering specialist testing equipment, a range of CNC machinery and a laser workshop.

Opportunity to attend exciting industry visits, which in recent years have included companies such as Coca Cola, Prodrive, Jaguar Land Rover and BMW via our Global Leaders Programme (GLP).

The course can be studied full-time over one year or part-time over two or three year period – dependent on individual applicants - starting in September. All modules within the course are mandatory.

The full-time mode takes place over two semesters. The course is underpinned by current research in the various specialised fields and newly evolving areas within the disciplines and will explore different ways that effective leadership and management can significantly contribute to wealth creation, competitiveness, and the advancement of society. 

Some of the modules adopt an activity-led learning approach, for example, we might provide you with a case study in supply chain management which requires problem solving skills and research with team or individual analysis.

We aim to improve your digital fluency by using appropriate software and learning technologies, such as Microsoft Project. There are also opportunities to attend subject specific seminars and guest lectures, which have in the past covered topics such as industry 4.0 and The IET Viscount Nuffield lecture. 

Teaching methods include: lectures, tutorials, case studies, simulations, individual and group exercises and projects.

Achievement of learning outcomes in most taught modules is assessed by a combination of group work, in-class tests, written-reports and presentations. The learning outcomes of modules, assignments and projects will be clearly stated in advance and your work will be marked according to how well you achieve these learning outcomes. You need to achieve 40% or above to pass.

The breakdown of assessment varies with each module and your final year project is assessed by report, a presentation/poster and viva with each element having different academic weighting. 

In order to achieve the award of Bachelor of Engineering (Honours), a student must successfully pass all modules and satisfy the University requirements of 120 additional credits (based on entry with 240 credits). A student who does not pass all modules may apply for an intermediate award of Diploma of Higher Education or a Certificate of Higher Education.

On successful completion, you should be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of: A range of techniques, including the latest developments, to aid the management and business processes in a product-based organisation; the holistic nature of a product based organisation and how the main business functions inter-relate; how product based organisations interact with the external environment and the opportunities created by operating in a common market.
  • Apply relevant engineering business management concepts and theories to new contexts.
  • Analyse engineering management and business problems and exercise reasoned judgement in assessing business needs in a technology based enterprise.
  • Synthesise innovative solutions to problems in an engineering environment using appropriate tools and techniques.
  • Select appropriate tools for the analysis of engineering products and systems. 
  • Demonstrate critical thinking, analysis and synthesis concerning business problems and potential solutions.
  • Communicate effectively (orally and in writing) in English.
  • Effectively use communication and information technology tools in business applications. Transfer ideas and concepts from one area of knowledge to another in the development of solutions to engineering business management issues.

In a typical teaching week, you will have up to 15 ‘contact’ hours of teaching. This generally breaks down as:

  • Personal tutorial/small group teaching: 4 hours of small group teaching each week.
  • Medium group teaching: 6 hours of classes, workshops or seminar each week
  • Large group teaching: 5 hours of lectures each week.  

In addition, you will be expected to undertake at least 17 hours of self-directed study each week, e.g. working on course assignments, preparing presentations, undertaking research and doing background reading.
