After induction there will be a series of optional workshops which are designed to support you as you begin your research degree. These focus on understanding the process and also help you develop academically. These workshops will include:
Overview of the Curriculum Framework
This workshop details each stage of your research programme, covering the requirements and milestones you will need to achieve in order to progress throughout your research degree.
Introduction to E Learning
This workshop provides an introduction to the different online systems at Coventry University that you will need to use during your research degree including: Solar, Moodle, Turnitin and the PGRSU Portal Pages.
Development Needs Analysis
This workshop helps you to think about what research skills you currently have, and what skills you need and want to develop. The session will encourage you to focus on three particular skills that you want to develop, and how you might achieve this.
Introduction to the Library
The library introduction session will inform you about the range of services and resources available from the library to help you with your research. It will also include a tour of the new Postgraduate Reading Room.
RefWorks: An Introduction
RefWorks is a piece of web-based software which will help you to store and organise references from lots of different sources and easily create reference lists in the correct format for your work.
Academic writing workshops
There will also be a range of academic writing workshops designed to develop your writing skills. These are run by a team from our Centre for Academic Writing.

Introduction to research design and writing
Within your first 2 months at Coventry University you will be expected to attend a 2 day mandatory module called introduction to research design and writing.
You will have the opportunity to meet other new and current research students in a more social setting with drinks and nibbles! You will have the chance to be introduced to all of the support and professional services teams that you have access to throughout your research degree.
Drop in Sessions
You are always welcome to drop into the Postgraduate Research Support Unit you will find us in the Alan Berry Building—Room G15. In addition we have also set aside some dedicated drop-in sessions throughout your first few weeks for all new students. You can come along with any query or issue and we will help or signpost you to other support where necessary.
